Fighting For Our Portion
You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier. 2 Timothy 2:3-4

In Deuteronomy 20, God commanded the Officers of Israel’s army to excuse from combat any soldier who had recently built a new house or had planted a vineyard or was engaged to be married. The men engaged in combat needed to be all in. There was no place on the battle lines for men who were distracted by domestic affairs. A soldier with a distracted heart and mind would jeopardize the lives of his fellow soldiers. Likewise, anyone who was fearful or fainthearted was also to be sent home.
As believers, we are Christ’s soldiers engaged in a continuous spiritual battle and we are to fight for every inch of heavenly ground. Israel's enemies were the ungodly Canaanites. Our enemies are unseen wicked spirits in heavenly places who are constantly trying to drive wedges between us and our Lord. Our enemy is relentlessly trying to disarm us by keeping us from our daily portion of God's heavenly manna, His Word. Our enemy is also using all types of distractions to keep us from engaging in effectual prayer. Another tactic of our enemy is to permeate our minds with fearful thoughts to keep us from being the faithful witnesses we are called to be. Therefore, we see the importance of Paul's exhortation to Timothy, telling him we are indeed in a great battle, a battle that requires complete commitment and undivided attention. So today, be armed with the armor of God and commit yourself whole heartedly to the Lord of Heaven’s Army, who goes before you to fight for you. If you will keep yourself from the distractions of the world and allow God to equip and empower you, then all you have to do is follow after the Lord and He will go before you and cause you to walk in His victory. I will leave you with the words of David…
"Then all this assembly shall know that the LORD does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord's, and He will give you into our hands"
 1 Samuel 17:47.
